About

"Scribbled silhouettes of branches are rendered across an azure sky and the ocean gleams. The observation of the natural world, its structure and mystery are elements that come together in my work. In the space that is no space, the formation of an interior landscape occurs. The combination of fortuitous events during printmaking and the layering of collage are the vehicles that allow me the flexibility to build, demolish, and rebuild the emotional makeup of this newly constructed environment."

Mira Lehr

Mira Lehr was born in New York but has lived most of her life in Miami. She is a graduate of Vasser College and has studied painting with Robert Motherwell, James Brooks, Robert Juarez, and James and Nieves Billmyer (long time students of Hans Hofmann.) She participated with Buckminster Fuller on the first World Game Scenerio Project at the New York Studio School.

Lehr's art reflects her love of nature, but is not visually a mere imprint of nature. The inspiration is there, but the work links also to her memories, her dreams, and her intellegence. Her work is lush, even poetic. It is about space and how all things relate to each other. The subtle color harmonies combined with veils of Japanese paper contrast with expressionistic splashes and drips. The tension balanced between the hidden and the revealed, the hard edge and the soft focus all add to the mystery and the resonance of the work.

Mira was chosen for "A Century of Women Achivements" in the woman's pavillion at the Louisiana World's Fair. In 2009, her oral history conducted by Irving Sandler was included in the archives of the Getty Museum and Research Center in Los Angeles and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. She has also been chosen by the Art Embassies program to exhibit her work in the American Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria from 2008-2010. Odegard rugs inspired by Lehr's work were produced and travelled in an exhibition alongside the paintings to several cities.

In addition to numerous private collections, Lehr's work is represented in acclaimed public and corporate exhibitions such as Yellow Fellow in Woudrichem, theNetherlands, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Poughkeepsie, New York; the Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami; the Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida; the University Gallery, University of Texas, Tyler; the American Embassy, Brussles, Belgium; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NYC; Suntrust Banks, Florida; GenSpring FAmily Offices, and many others.
