Komtur and Komtura
Carrara Marble
7Wx 19Hx 4D
2002

Mozart’s Don Giovanni - I saw the performance in Salzburg with a friend. I did not think I would find a statue to play such an important part of the famous opera.

Komtur, the father of one of Don Giovanni’s victims, loses his life at the hand of the Don Juan. But he returns as a stone statue to bring justice.

In creating “Komtur and Komtura” I attempt to show that there also can be a female statue to bring to justice those who defy societal norms and betray innocent people.

“Komtur and Komtura” are similar, yet different.  Each is a statue, a principle expressed in a stone form. Each is reduced, stern, radiating clarity.  Both coalesce into each other, creating a “one“.  Komtura, however, is more earthbound, with a lower center of gravity. There are more lines, colors and variations in her appearance, represented by the natural appearance of the marble.

Komtura ultimately has the same message as Komtur, but communicated differently, with the benefit of different life experiences.
